adventure.

i found a draft of a post from January 2011.  i love discovering old stuff!  some of the info has changed since then (my sister moved), but the gist remains true.  here it is (i'm imagining a blurry dream sequence like i'm going back in time).

i watched this video when it came out in December during the first of several blizzards that hit New England, collectively known as the Snowpocalypse or Snowmaggeden of 2010/2011.  it started on Christmas Eve, i think.  i remember reading a lot of articles about people trying to get home for the holidays and being stuck in airport terminals or on buses and subways that were rendered immobile.  then there were  more storms that hit around New Year's and intermittedly through January and February.  good ol' Texas even got a little bit of snow.  more like ice that barely resisted melting as soon as it hit the ground but to us Texans, that's a big deal.  Austin and Houston shut down for one day for an ice day.. and it was a Friday, which would have been awesome! if i weren't in Winter Park at the time.  missing an opportune free day off of work because i was on a snowboarding trip, surrounded by 3-4 feet of new snow each night - is that irony or just unfortunate circumstance?  Dallas closed down for several days, getting 2 feet of snow on one occasion.  crazy.  how we respond to icy conditions is laughable compared to people in other parts of the country.  my friend in New York is forced to walk through those conditions every day for work, only getting the day off only when the snow is so bad that the plows can't get through and clear the streets.  she posted a picture of a giant felled tree in the middle of her street, weighed down by giant chunks of snow.  my sister currently resides in Normal, Illinois.  where the hell is that, you ask?  about two hours south of Chicago.  we like to exchange the status of the weather at our respective locations and we always laugh how extreme her conditions are and how extreme the reactions are here.

any way!  back to the main point.. i watched this video when it came out in December, during one of the first big storms of the Snowpocalypse.  a man found a roll of film in a park in Brooklyn and decided to develop the pictures to give him clues to its owner.  he found the pictures to be beautifully artistic and mysterious and he became obsessed with finding the owners.  so, in this great modern day and age, he created a youtube video asking the world to help him.  the video is so cute and artistically edited.  the music, the mysterious images and the genuinely haltering narration made the story flow.  it really made me smile and i hoped that he somehow found those people.  the video struck me for several reasons.  one, i've been half heartedly telling myself that i would begin video editing my vacations as a scrapbook replacement and haven't taken a single step towards that.  two, at the beginning of the video, this ordinary slightly dorky but heartedly normal guy has vowed to himself to have more adventure in his life - and he did, which is so cute and courageous and uplifting. love it.

[note] let's put this post in perspective.  i started writing this over a year ago.  since then, almost every single aspect of my life has changed.. job, living situation, relationship, family, everything.  i was in need of inspiration and motivation to do something with my life, and i did <3

Music Review // Oh Land // Oh Land

i have been completely and utterly obsessed with Oh Land.  she’s has a soulful, clear voice and sings over electropop beats.  her style is similar to Lykke Li, which is funny because they’re both Scandinavian (Oh Land is Danish, Lykke Li is Swedish).  what is with that area and their delicious electropop?  i love it.  she was a professional ballet dancer but switched over to music after an injury.  you can definitely hear the grace and pain in her songs.  she said sorry but you're never gonna dance again but my feet just keeps me moving trying to break the chain.  she has a chic style in her videos with a little darkness and looks like an indie Heidi Klum.  i like that feel, that European movies and music can manage a little melancholy without becoming emo.  when i listen to her, i want to swirl around and wave my arms around.  i can listen to her album on repeat for hours.  some of her songs are slow, but her voice carries her through those.  my favorite songs are Sun of a Gun, Wolf & I, White Nights and Perfection.

silhouette.

this is not the best silhouette picture ever, but i'm trying to stick to pictures i took in the last couple days.  this is my sister while we're driving down Lakeshore Drive.  we loved soaking in all the beautiful delights of Chicago.  the closeness of the water to the city is a little surprising but seeing people beach it up with skyscrapers as a background is pretty cool.  i may switch this picture out for something else later..
